Shell Step Programme
Shell Step is a service designed to help small and medium-sized businesses develop by kick-starting and managing new projects that can be achieved within a realistic timescale and at an affordable price.
Every year, Shell Step (previously known as the Shell Technology Enterprise Programme) recruits the UK’s brightest, most enterprising undergraduates and matches them with the specific needs of small and medium-sized businesses. By taking on a student for a Shell Step project, you can access fresh ideas and new skills that will have a positive impact on your business performance.
Success Matrix are the appointed Agents for delivering Shell Step in Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Rutland.
How does Shell Step Work?
If you have a specific business or technical project in mind, but don’t currently have the time to dedicate to it, we can course the right undergraduate with the profile and skills you need.
Projects typically take place for eight weeks over the summer period (July and August)
What projects can be undertaken?
There are no real restrictions to the type of project that you can set for a student and Success Matrix can advise you on what you can realistically expect your Shell Step student to achieve over the course of the project.
Typical areas that Shell Step students can focus on include:
- Setting up IT and/or accountancy systems
- Design and implementation of websites
- Marketing plans and Market Research
- Design of company literature
- Analysis of production methods
Who can take part?
Shell Step is designed as a programme of cost effective support for small businesses and community and social enterprises (typically less than 250 employees)
To get the most out of Shell Step you’ll naturally need to have the space and resources necessary for the student to complete the project.
How much will it cost?
Students are paid a weekly training allowance of £185 (Summer 2006), which is free of National Insurance and Income Tax contributions. Therefore the average cost of an undergraduate working full-time on an eight-week project will be around £1480 + VAT; however subsidies are often available subject to availability so please ask!
Students are paid directly by Success Matrix and companies are invoiced at the start of the programme for their part of the contribution. The students are not employed by the company and do not appear on their payroll.
